Australia’s Dangerous Animals

Australia is home to enoromous volumes of dangers animals and wildlife. In episode 5, I answer listener questions about the best the dangers of Australias outdoors.

When it comes to snakes, Australia has 14 venemous snakes, including the Taipan, whose venom is 50 times at toxic as that of the Cobra. Fortunately, Australia’s snakes prey on mice and similar vermon, not humans. That’s the key to reducing the risk of snakebite when in the outdoors.

I talk about the incidence of Shark attacks in Australia, and some simple precautions you can take to reduce the (unlikely) chance you could be involved.

We also talk about Kangaroos, and I reveal my “fail-safe” location to see Kangaroos in the wild.

My favourite location is an easy 2 hours drive from Sydney CBD in the suburb of “Glenbrook” in the heart of the Blue Mountains, a fantastic destination in it’s own right.

There’s a small campsite on Bruce Rd, Glenbrook. Just follow Burfitt Rd, Glenbrook into Bruce Rd and into the Blue Mountains National Park, and you can’t miss the campsite. The link below shows directions to the site.

Sydneys Open Air Cinemas

Open Air Cinema is just another example of Sydney residents wanting to do indoor activities whilst outdoors.  This can be witnessed every Spring without fail.  In this episode, we discuss open-air cinemas and entertainment, and how easy it is to be a part of it during the months October – April.

In episode 4 of The Sydney Visitor, I talk about three of the most popular open-air events:

Shakespeare bythe sea is another uniquely Sydney event that is well worth the trek to the northern suburbs.  Every Friday and Saturday during summer, the Shakespeare by the sea company gather at Balmoral beach, to perform one of the two Shakespeare plays featured that season.

Surprisingly, there is no admission charge, no tickets and it is free to attend and watch, however the actors ask that you make a donation when they come around at the end of the show.

The Shakespeare By the Sea Website contains more details including seasons and show times.

More Beer Drinking Tips

One of the crucial pieces of knowledge in any new city, is of course how to order beer.

I discuss the difference between a “middy” and a “schooner” and how to mix and match beer names, glass sizes and quantities, so you’ll soon sound like a local when you slide up to order a drink.

It’s all in good fun, drink up.

Bondi Beach and the Bondi to Coogee Walk

Bondi Beach, Australia is perhaps the most photographed and celebrated beach in the world.  In this episode of The Sydney Visitor we look at that sights, sounds and attractions that can’t be missed on your trip to Bondi.

Bondi Beach

The bondi icebergs started as a swimming club for devoted winter swimmers.  From humble and eccentric beginnings, this club has grown to the largest licensed swimming club in the world.  You can check out the views, the history and the menus at their website www.icebergs.com.au.

If you’re lucky enough to catch the “Sculpture by the Sea” exhibits, you’ll get a unique taste of the Sydney art and aculptural scene, as well as enjoying the natural beauty of the Bondi to Tamarama walk.We talk about the City to Surf Fun Run, and why this is a not-to-be-missed event for any visit to Sydney.  Run details and entry forms (if you’re feeling keen) can be found here.  The picture below shows the route taken every year.

City to Surf Route

The Bondi to Coogee walk is one of those lesser known parts of Sydney, where locals flock on a nice summer bay.  We talk about the easiest and most enjoyable ways to experience the Bondi - Coogee walk. You can get a detailed map and description of the route here

Sydney Harbour Bridge and Glebe Markets

In this episode, we take an inside look at the Sydney Harbour bridge.  Many tourists who visit Sydney are comtent to simply get down to Sydney Harbour foreshore and have a look at the Harbour Bridge and take the obligatory photographs in front of it.  In this episode of the Sydney Visitor, Garry tells a little about the history of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, including the opening ceremony that was remarkable for all the wrong reasons.

When it comes to Sydney Harbour Bridge, there are a lot more enjoyable ways to experience it than a handful of tourist snappies.  In addition to viewing it from Sydney Harbour, you can actually go and take a walk across the Bridge.  On the northern end of the bridge, the suburb of North Sydney has plenty of rewards for the walker, and thousands of people make this walk daily to commute to walk.

Also, for those that are history minded, the Pylon lookout has an excellent (if compact) museum, which also has magnificent views over the harbour area, for a very reasonable price.

If you’re looking to make a day of it, the Bridge Climb is an experience that few of those who are fortunate enough, never forget.

Glebe Markets

If you’re looking for an experience that is essentially Sydney, in all it’s variety, quirkiness and culture, then look no further than Glebe, in the inner west.  Glebe Market day (Saturday) in particular, offers a rich cross-section of Sydney’s community, all gathered together to expereince life and makets … one mans trash is another mans treasure.

The Glebe Society Website contains maps on how to get there from the City, both walking and via public transport.

Sydney Harbour

In this very first episode of The Sydney Visitor, I discuss that famous tourist icon, Sydney Harbour. We talk about the four best ways to experience the harbour. Probably the easiest way to explore Sydney Harbour is by walking around it. The map below shows some of the areas you can walk around Sydney Harbour.

The video below has been taken from the Sydney Ferry

In this episode, we also discuss some of the tips and tricks for drinking beer in Sydney. Whose “shout” is it, and what does that mean anyway. Beer drinking is a big pastime in Sydney, so make sure you’re aware of the etiquette.

Hope you enjoy the first episode of The Sydney Visitor.
