Your First Day in Sydney

In episode 8, I talk about my recommendation on how to spend your first day in Sydney.

Although it is quite touristy, I recommend spending some time on a bus tour of Sydney. The Sydney Buses “Sydney Explorer” is a very convenient and cost effective tour. It’s easy to arrange, and a good way to get “oriented” to the layout of the city.
A pretty unique alternative is a “hop on, hop off” harbor cruise tour of the city and harbor.

We also talk about some of the options for getting to and from Sydney Airport when you first arrive. Although there are a few options, each has its advantages and disadvantages.

Anzac Day is one of the most uniquely Australian days of theYear. In this episode aI talk a little about the background and significance of Anzac day, including why it is such an important day for Australians.

The Anzac Site has a lot more detail on the military campaign and it’s significance.

I also talk about the events that mark Anzac Day each year, including the memorial services, marches, and of course the tradiotional game of chance, “two up”!

Video Marching and Australian Two Up game on Anzac Day.

We also take a ride down the Parramatta River on the River Cat, and see the Opera House and Harbour bridge from another angle.

Sydneys Open Air Cinemas

Open Air Cinema is just another example of Sydney residents wanting to do indoor activities whilst outdoors.  This can be witnessed every Spring without fail.  In this episode, we discuss open-air cinemas and entertainment, and how easy it is to be a part of it during the months October – April.

Shakespeare bythe sea is another uniquely Sydney event that is well worth the trek to the northern suburbs.  Every Friday and Saturday during summer, the Shakespeare by the sea company gather at Balmoral beach, to perform one of the two Shakespeare plays featured that season.

Surprisingly, there is no admission charge, no tickets and it is free to attend and watch, however the actors ask that you make a donation when they come around at the end of the show.

The Shakespeare By the Sea Website contains more details including seasons and show times.

More Beer Drinking Tips

One of the crucial pieces of knowledge in any new city, is of course how to order beer.

I discuss the difference between a “middy” and a “schooner” and how to mix and match beer names, glass sizes and quantities, so you’ll soon sound like a local when you slide up to order a drink.

It’s all in good fun, drink up.
